JNVs are a system of central residential schools for talented children predominantly from rural areas in India. They are run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The primary objective is to provide good quality modern education, including a strong component of culture, values, environmental awareness, and physical education, to talented children predominantly from rural areas, irrespective of their socio-economic condition.

Yes, all Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully co-educational and residential. They provide separate, secure hostel facilities for boys and girls from Class VI to XII, making them a unique boarding school system in India.

Admission to JNVs is primarily through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST), which is conducted by NVS. This test is held for entry into Class VI. Lateral entry admissions for Class IX and XI are also conducted based on availability of seats.

The JNV admission policy ensures that 75% of the seats are reserved for students from rural areas. Reservations are also provided for Scheduled Caste (15%), Scheduled Tribe (7.5%), and 3% for Divyang (Disabled) children. A minimum of one-third of the seats are reserved for girl students across all categories.

The policy aims to have one JNV in every district of the country. Currently, there are JNVs in almost all districts of all States and Union Territories (UTs), except Tamil Nadu and a few others where state governments have yet to allocate suitable land.

Education, board, and lodging are provided free of cost to students from Class VI to XII. However, a nominal fee of ₹600/- per month is collected from students of Class IX to XII (excluding SC/ST students, all girl students, and students whose family income is below the poverty line).

The medium of instruction is generally the mother tongue/regional language up to Class VIII. From Class IX onwards, instruction shifts to Hindi or English for core subjects. All JNVs are affiliated with the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

The Migration Scheme is a unique feature of JNVs. Under this policy, 30% of students in Class IX are exchanged between JNVs in different linguistic regions (Hindi-speaking to Non-Hindi speaking and vice-versa) for one academic year to promote national integration and cultural exchange.

JNVs emphasize holistic development. They provide extensive facilities for organized sports, games, and co-curricular activities (CCAs) like art, music, yoga, computer education, and various clubs, ensuring physical, social, and cultural growth alongside academics.
